We can turn them over and weigh them in our hands and maybe that will protect us from them. But maybe not. So if you’re looking for something intelligent, thought-provoking and different, and don’t mind stories that are sinister and creepy, then I would recommend this fascinating collection. I laughed, I grimaced, my heart was broken and I was full of rage as the author made me feel a variety of emotions over the course of this collection. This was my first time reading anything by this author and I was immediately pulled in by the immersive writing and loved the elements of horror and dark comedy that was infused into the stories. I enjoyed this collection but there were one or two stories that were a little bizarre for my taste.

These sections seemed to tell another, more personal, story and I enjoyed the glimpse into the author’s mind and feeling like she was almost there with me as I read. "Things We Say in the Dark is a striking, dark, curious and unsettling collection of short stories that explore fear through a creative lens. Between each story there is commentary from the author where she talks about her life, her motivations for writing the book and her writing process.

But we can visit our fears at night, in the dark . The stories that stood out in my mind were Birds Fell From The Sky and Each One Spoke In Your Voice, My Body Cannot Forget Your Body, Good Good Good, Nice Nice Nice and The Only Thing I Can’t Tell You Is Why. I flew through it quickly but it is also ideal for dipping in and out of when you only have a small time to read. Each story has a deeper meaning under its surface, the author addressing subjects such as love, loss, longing, relationships, parenthood, sexism, homophobia and abuse.
