Reviews

Emma's Biblio Treasures

After having this book on my shelves for almost four years I finally got around to reading it, opting to listen on audiobook when I wasn’t feeling up to reading a physical book. Rowan's retelling of events reveals she has kept secrets. This is my second time reading a Ruth Ware book and my favourite so far.

Casey Williams

The idea of a whole house run by an app makes me uneasy, and this modern fear merges with a more traditional horror to create an inescapable malevolent atmosphere. There is another reason why she’s at Heatherbrae House and it’s not just that very generous salary. There are secrets to be unravelled about this family and it’s house but also about Rowan herself. This along with strange noises, secret rooms and weird occurrences quickly rattle her.

It is also all handled in way that is different enough to avoid being hackneyed or clichéd. This is my first book by Ware and I really hope to read more of her books after reading this one! When a nanny position in the Scottish Highlands comes up, she jumps at the chance to interview as it offers a substantial salary, a live-in post in the stunningly refurbished Heatherbrae House and a chance of escape. The house had a creepy vibe and ominous atmosphere which built tension and suspense as the story progressed.

There are not many characters to get to know in the book. But if she didn’t do it, who did? I couldn't read this book when it got dark because I got too scared! The characters were brilliant; Rowan was easy to relate to and her young charges broke my heart and frustrated me in equal measure, especially Maddie.

Katyjam

I knew there was something not quite right about her, but I didn't work out what it was until the end. I was very impressed by "The Turn of the Key" and I enjoyed it from start to finish. However during lockdown, I found a new love for this type of fiction.

There are a couple of twist that I really didn't expect and I was literally sitting there with my mouth open in shock because I didn't see it coming. but all handled skilfully and the story is well paced throughout. My Ruth Ware book I’ve read and I was no disappointed. There are a few hints that she is hiding some of her character traits along the way but you presume she means her non smoking CV status and nothing much more sinister.

Amy Littleford

A great crime thriller to get your teeth into and solve the murder. However, I was thoroughly engrossed within the read.
