The author has a strong descriptive style - she packs in historical details, jokes and interesting parallels with the present day - all of which paint a vivid picture of Gillray and his artist friends. Love the way current day idioms are sometimes used.

So this book comes at things from a completely original angle. .
Travelling Man
Really enjoyed this fresh approach to eighteenth-century life in London. Great to bring the stars of the show – James Gillray, Thomas Rowlandson, Isaac Cruikshank and the splendid Hannah Humphrey – back into the limelight where they belong. Alice Loxton is fabulous.

Witty, hilarious, fast moving, Loxton dives into historical detail with verve and vigour. One of the best history books I’ve read, very accessible, easy to read, great snippets in there…it is much like AL’s videos which are informative and very interesting without all the waffle of traditional historians. Brilliant. Fun - fast paced - informative - fascinating.

The book itself is beautiful - love the colours and the cover design. Highly recommend. The excitement of the era jumps off the page. reflecting the history of the time through the lens of contemporary satirists.
A hugely entertaining and very impressively researched book. A wonderful debut - join the stampede, rush out and get a copy! I have ordered several as presents, am so pleased with how it looks and can’t wait to give it to all my friends! I bought one of the earlier signed copies of this, but upon reading it, needed another to give as a present to my mum
