This is such a unique book in many ways. The way it’s written will surprise you as soon as you open the book.
The characters and interactions between them are brilliantly well-rounded and believable. Bearmouth is an original, compelling tale of friendship, loyalty, love and social injustice. I loved Newt, the main protagonist, who is strong, smart and capable.
It took me a while to get used to the spelling but realised it’s totally integral to the story and cleverly done. There were some dark scenes but they are necessary to get across the living conditions. You get the feeling that you’re closed in and it gets quite claustrophobic sometimes – very atmospheric!
The setting is unusual, below ground, dark and ominous. A well deserved Waterstone’s prize winner!
