Their memories of James were heartwarming to read about, and it felt like a satisfying read which I devoured in two sittings. James them hops on the sleeper train and puts his phone onto flight mode.

Despite being a fan of Watson the comedian, I had never picked up one of his books - quite the mistake, it transpires. Contacts was not quite what I was expecting, but it was cleverly written. James then switches his phone to flight mode.

All thats left to do is to send a last message to all his 158 contacts on his phone informing them of his intentions to take his own life. The narrative keeps you hooked, whilst ebbing between thought provoking introspection and tense drama. And the ending was a real gut punch.

We start off with James who has decided to end his life, but wants to let people know himself, so he sends a group text to all of the 158 contacts in his phone - some are family members, a serious ex, an ex best friend, his flatmate and several ex clients. I really recommend this book. The chapters alternate between James, and some of the contacts in his phone - upon receiving his text, his flatmate decides to take action, and the oblivious James continues the journey to his final destination. I think Mark has done well to tackle a very emotive subject, one that people naturally shy away from, and to do it without allowing the storyline to become self-pitying or maudlin.

I really enjoyed Contacts. This is a compelling tale with an empathetic, identifiable cast. I loved this book.

Contacts is a brave storyline with a quirky cast of characters. It was a very clever concept, and all of the characters were three dimensional and believable. James Chiltern is embarking on his final journey, uncomfortably holed up in a cabin on the London to Edinburgh sleeper train.
