If used on the genitals, asbestos can travel inside the body. It is not about one town. It is about half of the country,” Gara, of Ecofront, said. If it happens, it will not be about one village. Locals in Soyudlu still have questions about the pond’s safety, and others fear the dam might burst, which “will be a disaster. "If there was a problem inbye at the coal face and all the conveyors were running empty or halted, the landing lads at the loader end often took the opportunity to grab a catnap, however if caught asleep it could mean a fine or dismissal. Once inside the body, asbestos fibers migrate to sensitive tissues in the pelvis, chest and abdomen, slowly causing diseases such as mesothelioma and ovarian cancer. In 2000, in Baia Mare, Romania, a similar disaster occurred when the Baia Borsa mine burst, and 100,000 cubic meters of cyanide-poisoned water spilt into local rivers. Considered the worst ecological disaster in Eastern Europe since Chernobyl, the event still haunts many Romanians, and the contaminated water destroyed 80% of the aquatic life in the area.

Mickey Thames

Kemp's journey, though it has its battles and high action at time, gives us a very realistic look at how soldiering was done at the time, and often still is. You are to be commended for your fine and important work. This book is a must read for anyone living in the United States today and a firm reminder of how terrible civil wars are. It's particularly fun to read as someone who is bilingual, because of the names of places and groups which are in Spanish.

In the aftermath, he often came across captured members of the International Brigades, comprised of Irish, Canadian, American and British volunteers. In terms of this book, the quality of binding and production is fantastic.

Viva Franco! The book itself covers Kemp’s two years of experience in the Spanish Civil War, beginning his adventure with a certain naiveté (as does everyone who goes to war, myself included), and ending as a reasonably adept soldier, a man who spent time under fire, was wounded twice (the second time very seriously) and who kept his head during the chaos of battle.

The willingness of the Spanish Left to ignore moral failures and atrocities on their own side are echoed with the refusal of highly politicized people to see the excesses of their own side here in America and Europe. But heroism exists no matter if the press covers it or not. To be fair the book is not all gloom, indeed it is full of lively humor and joie de vivre, including many amusing asides of miserable billets, farcical escapades and drunken soldiers in addition to the many ironies and “catch-22s” that anyone sees and experiences in a war zone.
